Anodizing Tips

1)
Anodizing emphasizes defects; a deep etch helps even out faults. Brushing can be done when material is slightly damaged on the surface.

2) The deeper the etch, the less reflective the finish.

3) If you pass your fingernail at 90o to the surface and it snags, the mark will still be there.

4) Racking points will not be anodized. Advise us of critical exposed areas. Touch up will be at your request: None; Mil spec with Alodine 1200; Commercial with black touch up.

5) Anodizing is for aluminium only (non-aluminium rivets, bolts, screws, etc. will dissolve away and cause burning of the aluminium).

6) Different alloys anodized in the same bath may not come out in the exact same colour. The same kind of pieces in different alloys will come out in different colours. Always use the same alloy for the same finish.

7) Anodizing is non conductive - Please weld first

  • Use only a rod # 5356 for aluminium

  • The weld will be slightly different in colour

8)
Closed sections require drainage holes.

9) Remove all paint, grease and oil prior to shipping to Verdun Anodizing.

10) Aluminium is soft, so package the parts to withstand transport. Never put tape directly on the surface of the parts; always put paper first to avoid additional manual cleaning costs.
